The Entitlement of Opinion.

Ephemeral Optimism

Right, here I am stating my opinion.  In a post about opinions, and how they are really not all that great a thing after all.  More than a little hypocritical, I will agree.

I do want to make a general point here about the validity of opinions, but before I do I think I should set out my stall a little more neatly than usual.  We are all entitled to our opinions.  There, I’ve said it.  We are all not only permitted, but within the context of education and society we are actively encouraged to hold opinions on everything from which football team is better to the inherent dangers of vaccination.

Unfortunately I think we go too far in pursuit of freedom of speech however.  We seem to have reached the very strange situation where not only is an opinion permissible, but the validity of each and every opinion is…

Power distribution firms owe govt – NERC

Of the 11 electricity distribution companies in the country, only three have so far remitted to the Federal Government money due it, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said.

According to NERC, the development is in spite of the commendable improvement in revenue collection by the companies.

The commission, in a document on its third meeting with the power sector operators, noted that the defaulting firms would be contacted to explain why they failed to file their statements of accounts.

The document, which was made available to our correspondent by the Head, Public Affairs, NERC, Dr. Usman Arabi, stated that most Discos and power generating companies were up to date with their audit requirements for 2012, adding that out of the 11 Discos, nine had sent in their bank statements.

It stated, “The Market Operator’s response is being awaited for the matching review…

Listful Thinking

I started a garden this weekend.

That’s actually a lie.

I tore down a couple of my Murder Sheds this weekend and was left with two rectangular patches of dirt. I spent the next eight hours playing in that dirt, raking up old nails, pulling weeds and respectfully disposing of any mummified cats I found. I surrounded them with a wobbly wall of cobwebby bricks that were piled around my property and proclaimed, “These are my gardens.”

Then I saw a few more weeds and noticed that the ground wasn’t level, so I started digging around in the dirt again. I’ve been doing that for three days now. At this point I’ve dug and re-dug the same empty dirt plot so many times that if my neighbor suspected me of hiding a body and called the police, I wouldn’t even be angry. I’d shake her hand for being so vigilant…

Attacks on workers, facilities worry EKEDC

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has expressed strong disapproval at the incessant attacks of its workers by some angry electricity consumers while carrying out their legitimate duties.

The Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, EKEDC, Mr. Godwin Idemudia, in a statement on Wednesday, said the company was deeply worried over the daily attacks on both its workers and wanton destruction of its facilities over the current poor power supply situation in the country.

He lamented that some members of the public had continued to vent their anger on the company’s workers and destroy its installations despite EKEDC’s efforts at strengthening its distribution network since it took over the firm last November.

Although Idemudia said the management acknowledged the inconveniences caused by the current power situation to customers, he stressed the solution to the problem was not in the wanton destruction of the company’s property and…

Life Aboard the Traveling Circus

I’ve never been a foodie. I can’t tell you the difference between cooking with vegetable oil or olive oil, I rarely use measuring cups, and I’m still not sure how much pasta to throw in the pot for two people. However, I can tell you that nobody appreciates a gourmet meal quite like a kid who grew up on TV dinners.

When I was little and I would go to the grocery store with my mother, it seemed normal to just point out what microwave meals I wanted for the week. When I would eat them at the end of a long day, I would always feel empty, a little gross, and always hungry, hungry for something with a taste; with flavor.

Got “Got Milk?” Not Anymore…

The Life and Times of Nathan Badley...

All good things must come to an end.

After 20 years, the iconic “Got Milk?” campaign will be wrapping up. No more celebrities with ridiculous unrealistic milk mustaches. Farewell to the grammatically incorrect slogan that for years has haunted me. It is like a tiny piece of my childhood has died.

Not one to miss out on a chance to finally become the affluent member of society I really feel I should be, I have come up with a few slogans for the Milk Processor Education Program. (This is a real thing. I am not making the name up.) Yes, I know you have developed a new slogan already. “Milk Life.” What does that even mean? That is the worst slogan I have ever heard, and your last slogan seemed to be written by a person who did not have a firm grasp on the English language. There is no…
